Curse of the Dead Gods: A Rogue-Like That Falls Short of Expectations

Roguelikes rely heavily on their gameplay mechanics, and Curse of the Dead Gods is no exception. After playing a little bit, I've come away underwhelmed by its experience. The game's visuals are stunning, but unfortunately, they're not enough to make up for its lackluster gameplay.

My first encounter with K'ax taca was a prime example of this issue. Despite accumulating a whopping 2100HP, I was able to tank nearly 1400 damage and defeat him with relative ease. This trend continued throughout my playthrough, as even the game's bosses felt like sponges with simple patterns.

The only aspect that requires attention is the trap system. On occasion, I've cleared entire rooms without dodging due to the fact that enemies die quickly and it's more effective to rush them and attack while taking hits. The game's nimble character movement and clear enemy tells make it necessary to plan tactics carefully, separating enemies and picking them off one by one.

However, Curse of the Dead Gods takes a different approach, making the player an unstoppable force of nature. I'm accustomed to needing to dodge or parry perfectly in roguelikes to avoid taking damage, as every hit can be punishing and lead to an early demise. The fact that you're essentially a tank in this game raises questions about its design decisions.

After completing four full runs, I've come away with the conclusion that the developers are aware of the game's shortcomings but have chosen not to address them. As it stands, Curse of the Dead Gods falls short compared to other roguelikes in terms of its handling and gameplay mechanics.
